EdgeSense

A smarter safety edge for every platform

EdgeSense is a modular detection strip concept that combines pressure, motion and thermal sensing with visible and audible warnings at the railway platform edge.

Earlier warning at the point of risk

The platform-train interface is one of the most safety-critical parts of the passenger journey. EdgeSense focuses intelligence directly at the edge, where rapid detection and clear local warnings can support passengers and station teams. The concept is designed as a retrofittable strip, combining multiple sensor types with restrained lighting, audible alerts and staff notifications.

Project overview

Duration: 7 months
Focus: Rail safety innovation
Location: United Kingdom

One sensor cannot see every hazard

Platform conditions change with crowding, weather, luggage, mobility needs and service patterns. A single detection method may create blind spots or too many false alarms.EdgeSense explores sensor fusion: pressure, motion and thermal signals interpreted together to identify meaningful events while keeping the installation practical for existing stations.

Designed around the platform environment

Multi-sensor detection

Pressure, motion and thermal inputs provide complementary views of edge activity.

Immediate warning

Integrated light, sound and staff alerts communicate risk without relying on one channel.

All-weather operation

Graphene-assisted heating is explored to manage ice and snow at the detection surface.

A modular route to deployment

The project will examine sensing performance, false-alarm control, power demand, maintainability and integration with station procedures.Retrofittability is central to the concept. The aim is a system that can be installed in sections, serviced without major platform reconstruction and adapted to different station types. The resulting evidence will guide prototype development and controlled trials.
